The Way of The Future: Electronic Recycling for Oakville

Amanda Shaw • Mar 16, 2021

Oakville, Ontario, one of Canada's leading mecca for the technological age. Though the place may not look like a lot, the area has many stores that sell electronics. A simple Google query shows that there are many places to procure your electronic products. But when the time comes that they are no longer functioning and are already outdated, it would be time to dispose of them. Disposing of electronics can be tricky, more so in Canada. Though Canada does not have any regulations against the disposal of e-waste, the Federal Government would indeed put its foot down. This regulation is where electronic recycling for Oakville would come in handy.

Electronic recycling is not a particularly new thing. The
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) gave 70s America the law that it needs to reduce electronic waste. This law made it illegal to dump electronic waste in the States. After this resulted in much electronic recycling industry and proper disposal of electronic wastes, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of the United States states that the primary purpose of the RCRA was more than just recycling. They would also ensure the protection of both the environment and the health of the people.

But, just what are the advantages of
electronic recycling, and why would it be the next "in" thing in Oakville?

Environmental And Health Damage

As mentioned earlier, electronic waste can be potentially dangerous to the environment and human health. Electronic devices contain lead, arsenic, and cadmium, heavy metals potentially damaging to the soil when broken down. These heavy metals, when broken down, can damage the ground and trees that would grow on the earth where they broke down.
Research conducted by Adesokan et al. found out that the soil around an electronics recycling plant in Ibadan, Nigeria contains a higher concentration of copper, nickel, and cadmium. This study means that the ground is contaminated, and all that the plants are growing there would be contaminated.

This contamination, in turn, would give all of the crops growing in the soil some form of metal contamination, which would spread to humans after they have consumed it. These chemicals can lead to several health complications and even congenital disabilities in some cases.

Electronic wastes break down faster in water, as well. It can be worse on the water as well, as some metals oxidize. Dumping electronic waste on or near bodies of water can disrupt the ecosystem, as animals that rely on the waste would consume the water and would be contaminated. Once one of these toxins is ingested by humans, there is a chance that they would develop severe effects due to contamination; toxins such as lead, barium, mercury, and lithium can be considered as carcinogenic as well.

An adverse effect of electronic recycling in a modern area such as Oakville would significantly reduce the threat of soil contamination. A well-placed and well-managed electronic recycling plant would give Oakville the environmental protection that it has always needed.

Economic Advantage

Another good part of an electronic recycling plant is that it would provide more jobs for Oakville's people. Now that the pandemic has weakened the economy by a sizeable margin, more appointments would be needed for Canadians. Though the pandemic did not as severely hit Canada compared to the United States, extra jobs would still be significantly appreciated where it matters. Creating a sustainable business would need a team of professionals as well. Professionals would be required to build an efficient and effective recycling plant. An electronic recycling plant in Oakville would be sure to provide an excellent way to boost the economy more than it did.

Providing a stable income and tax return would be able to boost the economy by a mile.

Solid Waste Management

Now that more people in the world, there would be more need for lands to stay in. Electronic recycling centers would alleviate the need for landfills. Solid waste management has been an issue for a long time now, and electronic recycling centers for Oakville would give the place more lands to offer to its people.

As time goes on, people should take solid waste management into account even more. Though landfills are impossible to remove, electronics should always be disposed of properly because they could be toxic in the long run. Oakville does not fall short of landfills, and as time goes on, there would be an initiative for people to manage their solid waste properly.

It is almost inevitable that people would purchase more electronic products as time goes on. And, when that happens, there would be more waste that would be thrown away. When the time comes, electronics recycling plants will give the people the security they need, primarily when they are dedicated to living a zero-waste lifestyle.

Source of Materials

Do not confuse discarded electronics as useless; some are still salvageable to gather materials. Though some parts are virtually meaningless, some features that are still available could even be collected.
Recycling can pay dividends in more ways than one. For one thing, it would reduce the need to mine raw materials from nature. Secondly, it would also reduce the wastes that people would otherwise throw away. It does not sound good only for people dedicated to having a zero-waste lifestyle; it would help everyone. Nature is something that we should protect, and electronics recycling in Oakville would alleviate the need to create any other wastes that would be otherwise thrown away.

This recycling of materials would create a circular economy. A circular economy means that there would be virtually no wastes during the production, manufacturing, repair, and refurbishment of electronic products. Electronics recycling in Oakville would give the manufacturers the parts they needed to enter the future age. Some of these materials can be toxic to both the environment and the people as well. It would be more advantageous in the long run when they are re-extracted and used again. Electronic recycling would lessen the need for mining and protect the planet when there is a lesser need to mine rare minerals from the bottom of the earth.

Conservation of Energy

The energy involved in the creation of electronic products would be wasted after it has been disposed of. Electronics recycling also ensures energy would not be the only thing to be saved, but also materials. Everyone should be concerned about nature, and everyone should know how to conserve natural resources. Electronics recycling in Oakville would give both the people and corporations more options when they want to either dispose of and make use of recycled materials.

Conservation of energy should now be carefully considered, especially now that we are entering the age where everyone should know the damage that has been done to the earth by generations long past. Though it is virtually impossible to conserve energy per se, electronics recycling would give people a more environmentally-friendly option of discarding their used electronics.

Air Pollution

Now that we are talking about landfills and pollution, do not forget that burning waste products can also directly damage the air we breathe in. Moreso, burning electronic wastes would release hydrocarbons now into the atmosphere. Burning electronic waste is potentially detrimental and polluting the environment as well. Hydrocarbons are also a direct contributor to the greenhouse effect, one of the leading causes of global warming.

Though there are some salvage copper wires, some less-developed countries still burn their electronic wastes. That, in turn, is one of the leading causes of air pollution in the country.

Oakville, or even Canada in general, does not have this problem. But, people should always be wary of the potential effects of burning electronic wastes. Electronic recycling in Canada provides an extra layer of protection not just for us but for the planet as a whole as well.

People by and large purchase many electronics as a whole. Now that we are in the age of technology, it is almost inevitable that large amounts of electronic waste are dumped over time. But, that is where electronic recycling in Oakville comes in. Recycling is not a new thing per se, but ingenuity is the mother of innovation. Electronic waste is a significant problem, not just for the people but also for the planet we live on.
